USA HDR on PS4 and PS4 Pro: A Developer’s Perspective

Recommended Posts

Imagine! It’s been exactly two years since every single PS4 model was upgraded to support HDR, thanks to system software update 4.0. Looking back, HDR has had a heckuva impact on game artistry, greatly elevating already beautiful-looking games like God of War and Horizon Zero Dawn.

As a primer, HDR, aka high dynamic range, is an image display technology that can generate more vivid and dynamic colors, deeper blacks, and brilliant highlights. It’s one of those rendering technologies that you need to see to believe, because it makes the colors and light you see on your screen more closely matched to reality than with a non-HDR compatible TV.

You’ll want to make sure your 2K or 4K HDR-capable TV supports the HDR10 format. On your PS4 or PS4 Pro, activate this feature by heading to Settings → Sound and Screen → Video Output Settings → HDR and click “Automatic.”

To mark the big day, we asked developers for their insights on how adding HDR brings brilliance to their games.

Marvel's Spider-Man

Marvel’s Spider-Man
“We’ve tried to find the right balance with our HDR implementation such that the medium tones and dark tones in the image look the same as they would in non-HDR, but the brightest parts of the image really pop. Swinging around the city at night or in the rain shows off HDR nicely—the bright lights of the city really stand out against the darker background. As you progress through the game and meet up with some of the more colorful villains Spidey needs to contend with, there are some gorgeous night scenes with bright effects—but you’ll have to play the game to see what I mean.”
– Al Hastings, Chief Architect, Insomniac Games

Shadow of the Tomb Raider

Shadow of the Tomb Raider
“Our team worked very hard to fully support HDR, and revamped our entire pipeline to support HDR from the beginning. Our game offers realistic lights intensity calibration, HDR textures and global illumination energy conservation. Throughout the development of the game, we made sure to integrate HDR every step of the way. Thanks to this ongoing work, Shadow of the Tomb Raider looks more real and immersive, with more intensity and nuance. There are many areas we’re looking forward for you to experience in HDR, such as our jungle – which is especially amazing with the light on the sun coming through the dense foliage.”
-Frederic Robichaud, Programming Director, Eidos-Montréal

God of War

God of War
“Bringing to life the beautiful and fantastic world of Norse mythology is no easy feat, but in the latest God of War, Santa Monica Studio uses HDR to immerse players in a realm beyond imagining. HDR technology enhances the spectacular vistas you see in the game, and the realistic lighting that draws the players into a world of myth and legend. From inside Kratos’ home to the caves of Peaks Pass, there are a myriad of impressive examples in God of War of how HDR can take the gaming experience to a higher level of visual quality.”
– Florian Strauss, Technical Director, Santa Monica Studio

The Witness

The Witness
“Having our own in-house engine with a full HDR pipeline already in place made it easy to transition to HDR TVs. We just had to adapt the output image to this new standard… HDR allowed us to fully express the colorful, striking, visual art style of The Witness. Players can notice this immediately as soon as they exit the initial entry tunnel. The improved color space brought out colors impossible to show before, as well as rendered scenes in extreme light and brightness conditions. Our main challenge came from the fact that color in this game is an integral part of gameplay, and we couldn’t break any of the puzzles.”
– Salvador Bel Murciano, Programmer, Thekla

Horizon Zero Dawn

Horizon Zero Dawn + The Frozen Wilds
“Creating a lush, visually captivating game world was always one of the core development goals for Horizon Zero Dawn, and the HDR capabilities allowed the team at Guerrilla to really bring the brilliance to life. On HDR-compatible 4K displays, Horizon Zero Dawn’s environments truly stun, and the enhanced color fidelity brings out the rich hues and subtle details of the wilderness. Sunsets are particularly breathtaking; the suffusion of deep reds and oranges are guaranteed to make players forget they’re surrounded by deadly machines.”
– Jeroen Roding, Community Manager, Guerrilla

Final Fantasy XV

Final Fantasy XV
“Final Fantasy XV’s HDR support, mainly targeted toward 1,000 nits TVs, adjusts the tone curve when a screen filter is applied, so that the images are most beautifully displayed under the target environment.

While the tone curve is adjusted to stay within the color value of 1.0 in LDR, the curve forms a more gentle shape in HDR. Gaming in HDR will allow players to experience the dazzling sun, lush forests and vast nature where living creatures exist, at resolutions that offer an enhanced sense of realism.

Another great part of this is that they can witness Final Fantasy’s whimsical and beautiful world with greater clarity.”

– Yuji Shinoda, Producer for Final Fantasy XV, Luminous Productions

Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice

Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice
“With the HDR update to Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, we re-generated a lot of our sky textures from an HDR source to get the best range of lighting possible. Hellblade will detect when a player has an HDR TV and optimize its lighting and art accordingly, resulting in a much better range of brightness – the weather and atmospheric effects in Hellblade are particularly noticeable in this regard. Additionally, we tweaked the interface colors to maintain their detail and vibrancy within more extreme lighting. The moment when the golden sunset breaks through the clouds as you approach the bridge to Helheim for the first time is made all the more breathtaking with HDR.”
– Francesca Mead, Product Manager, Ninja Theory

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided
“Deus Ex: Mankind Divided came out just before PS4 Pro launched. It was an interesting challenge for our team, as our game was completed and we couldn’t go back and tweak the non-HDR visual experience. On the other hand, creating the HDR version wasn’t as easy as flipping a switch – as you can imagine!

As a first step, we had to take frames from our game in sRGB color space (regular TVs), and apply the necessary transformations to display the same frames in Rec. 2020 color space (HDR TVs), with an average luminance level. We could then see for ourselves how tints varied, following color rotations between the two spaces. For the final luminance curve to apply, we simply used the same Brightness calibration menu we already had in our game. The same asset, displayed in a different color space, allows an HDR player to help us identify the maximum luminance level of his TV.

Finally, we bet on the fact that players would be particularly impressed by the brilliancy of certain colors, compared to non-HDR visuals. We added an artificial curve to our final image, in order to boost brilliant pixels. It was kind of an empiric process, but it allowed us to obtain the best results considering our constraints.

One of our favorite areas of the game to appreciate in HDR is Golem City, with all its neon lights that contrast with the darkness of the environment itself.”

– Jean-François Dufort, Lead Graphics Programmer, Eidos-Montréal

There are plenty more games to come that we can’t wait to play through in HDR, including Days Gone, Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, and more.

What game do you think shows HDR off best? Let us know in the comments below!

Welcome to the Vanguard, recruit! Consider this your field guide to surviving the intense bullet-hell action of Evasion, which launches October 9 on PS VR.
Even if you are a grizzled FPS veteran, there’s plenty of challenge in store for you when you square off against the Optera. The development team assembled these tricks and tips to give you your best shot at survival. Good luck out there.

Essential Tips For Surviving Your First Mission
Move or Die: Standing still in Evasion is a death sentence, especially as the game escalates in difficulty. We made sure there’s a locomotion option for every playstyle, so it’s worth going through the tutorial to find the one that suits you best. Get to Cover: The Optera are relentless and will come at you from every direction, from both land and sky. Find cover early and take advantage of that crouch function. Max out your Blaster’s Energy Level: Your blaster has three energy levels. You want to hoover up those power cores so you can be at max level as much as possible. Not only will your blaster pack more punch, but you will have access to powerful finishing moves called Surge Attacks that can wipe out swaths of Optera in one go. Watch Your Health: Get in the habit of regularly checking your health, which is displayed on the top of your blaster, and the health of your teammate during major encounters. Perform Surge Attacks on enemies to increase your odds of extracting a health core, and when it activates, make sure you are standing inside the healing pool. Turn It Up: In addition to getting to hear some fun banter and the game’s epic soundtrack, many enemies can be heard before they can be seen, which will give you a definitive tactical advantage. Use That Tether: The tether can be used to heal teammates, as well as perform class-specific buffs. But it can also be used against Optera to perform a tether lash, which is a great way to finish off an enemy and guarantees a core drop. Review the class selection panel in the main hangar for a detailed description of each classes tether ability, then try them out in the shooting range to find the one that you like best. Mix and Match: Find a friend and strategically pair your classes to make you into an unstoppable destructive force. The Surgeon and the Warden make a classic healer/tank duo, for example. The Striker and the Engineer are also an effective pair. Unleash Surge Attacks: Each hero class packs a unique and devastating Surge Attack that can be activated once your energy level and health are maxed out. Boss encounters and digging the enemy out of entrenched fortifications are ideal times to deploy a Surge Attack; however, your weapon’s energy level will steadily deplete as you unleash an attack, so you want to use them strategically. If you heed these tips, you will have a fighting chance (even in the Survival challenges!) when the Optera descend on October 9. We also highly recommend trying Evasion out with the AIM controller; holding the rifle in your hand really lets you feel the kickback from each shot.

Got a question about Evasion’s gameplay, classes or locomotion options? Drop us a comment in the space below. We’d love to hear your thoughts.

Nickelodeon Kart Racers is a kart racer featuring characters and slime-filled tracks from iconic Nickelodeon shows such as SpongeBob SquarePants, Hey Arnold!, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (and more) that’s meant to be accessible for younger kids while also remaining a challenge for nostalgic, older players. It’s a classic kart racer, but has quite a few innovative features that have been fun to work on and are even more fun to play.
Though our team had not worked with these characters before in a game, our whole team knows and loves them. Our group ranges from 22 to 45 years old, so we all have fond memories of the same iconic characters.

      Did You Know?
Double Dare introduced the first messy Slime-y physical challenges to kids and families in 1986!
This game is a mixed-universe game and that kind of game needs something to glue the different IPs together (pun intended)! A great symbol of Nickelodeon’s irreverent humor and crazy antics is the iconic green slime. I remember seeing someone slimed for the first time, during the Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards. Watching celebrities get unexpectedly slimed is one of the most exciting parts of the show and how can that not be a great game mechanic?
Nickelodeon shows have featured slime for over 30 years and it has never lost its popularity and appeal. My eight-year-old daughter was watching slime-making videos on the internet before we started on this game. It jumped out at us as a way that the game could scream Nickelodeon, have a super fun device for game mechanics and attract a younger audience that loves slime.

      Did You Know?
In 1990, Nickelodeon Studios opened in Orlando, Florida. Visitors are greeted by a Slime Geyser that erupts with Slime every 15 minutes.
Bright green slime is a great visual and it shows up throughout the tracks, making them interesting and varied, while still being intuitive. Slime fills your kart’s turbo meter, which can activate a speed boost so getting slimed can really determine who wins the race. The karts can even sail like a jet ski on top of slime pools! That creates a change in mechanics and visually looks awesome. Slime pickups and triggers give players secondary objectives and, of course, in true Nickelodeon fashion, you can’t stand on the winners’ podium without your racer getting covered in slime! The Vector Unit game engine supports water racing, so we saw that as a great opportunity to introduce a different racing experience. Your kart will transform into a jet ski and it’s easy to get turbo charged when sailing on slime. Plus, the areas are wide open, so you can go really fast.

      Did You Know?
In 2010 Katy Perry received one of the most epic Slime-ings in history while presenting at the Kids Choice Awards. The pressure of the blast was so high; it knocked her off her feet.
The important thing that kids have quickly figured out in play-testing is that slime helps the player; in their feedback, they’ve given the slime more importance than any other feature. They enjoy how it looks, behaves and is used in the game which makes us feel great because that’s what we have strived for.
We were super worried that slime would be a big challenge to technically embody so we used Nickelodeon’s special slime recipe to make a few gallons of slime for real, which was a lot of fun. Kids are no fools and they know the difference between slime and green water, so we had to study every element of the goo to truly capture the slime in-game.
Our FX and graphics programmers spent a crazy amount of time perfecting the virtual slime. There are over ten different kinds of slime art, including wavy slime pools, puddles, pipes, spray, splashes and more. Most are done with a mix of procedural particles, shaders and textures, sprites and UV maps. The extra effort was worth it; we’re really proud of the result.
